The Gordie Howe International Bridge has officially opened to pedestrians and cyclists, following its recent opening to motorists, amidst ongoing political tensions and financial discussions.

WINDSOR, ONT. — The Gordie Howe International Bridge is now accessible to pedestrians and cyclists, having opened its multi-use path under clear skies this morning. This bridge, which connects Windsor, Ontario, to Detroit, Michigan, had welcomed motorists just a week prior, amidst a backdrop of financial controversies surrounding the project. A Windsor resident made headlines by camping out for 28 hours to become the first Canadian to cross into the U.S. via the newly established 2.5-kilometre pathway. Meanwhile, a visitor from Michigan was the first to cross into Canada and was awarded a certificate to commemorate the occasion.
The bridge, named after the legendary Canadian hockey player Gordie Howe, who spent 26 seasons in the NHL largely with the Detroit Red Wings, is expected to serve its purpose for an estimated lifespan of 125 years. Although long lines formed on the first day of pedestrian access, officials reassured the public that there will be plenty of chances to enjoy the walk or bike ride across the bridge in the future.
However, the project has been overshadowed by political disagreements, particularly following a February social media post from U.S. President Donald Trump, wherein he stated that the U.S. would need compensation before the bridge could be opened. The planned joint celebration marking the bridge's opening was cancelled due to recent threats from Washington regarding new tariffs on Canadian goods.
Additionally, Liberal MPs in Canada have obstructed parliamentary hearings intended to clarify the commitments made by Prime Minister Mark Carney's government to Trump to facilitate the bridge's opening. According to a proposed agreement in principle, Canada is set to share half of the net toll revenues generated by the bridge with the U.S. over the next 15 years.
