Graham Selected as Construction Manager for North Surrey Interceptor Storage Tank Project

Graham has been appointed by Metro Vancouver to oversee the North Surrey Interceptor Storage Tank project, aimed at enhancing wastewater capacity and safeguarding the Fraser River.

In a significant development for the region's wastewater management, Graham has been chosen by Metro Vancouver to serve as the construction manager for the North Surrey Interceptor Storage Tank project. This initiative, which is part of the broader effort to bolster the wastewater system's capacity, is particularly crucial for protecting the Fraser River from pollution.
The North Surrey Interceptor is a key sewer line that transports wastewater from Maple Ridge and North Surrey to the Annacis Island Wastewater Treatment Plant located in Delta. The project involves constructing a new storage tank facility on the corner of 136 Street and King Road in Surrey, which will stand at an impressive height of 10 meters. Designed to accommodate approximately 34,000 cubic meters of wastewater, this facility will play a critical role in temporarily holding excess wastewater during heavy rainfall events, thereby mitigating the risk of sewer overflows.
In addition to the storage tank, the project will also include the installation of a new pump station, along with generator and fuel storage buildings. An operations yard will be constructed, and a rooftop air-quality system is being designed to effectively manage odours emanating from the facility. The project will also focus on integrating architectural and landscaping features that will harmonize with the surrounding natural environment, ensuring that the development is both functional and aesthetically pleasing.
Notably, this project marks Metro Vancouver's first foray into utilizing a collaborative Construction Manager at Risk (CMAR) contract model for a wastewater conveyance project. This innovative approach is expected to lay the groundwork for similar future projects, enhancing efficiency and collaboration in construction management.
The project's benefits extend beyond infrastructure improvements; by increasing the storage capacity for wastewater and reducing the likelihood of sewer overflows, it is anticipated to significantly contribute to the efforts aimed at protecting water quality in the Fraser River. This aligns with broader environmental objectives in the region.
Preconstruction activities for the North Surrey Interceptor Storage Tank project commenced in the summer of 2026, with major construction activities projected to kick off in the summer of 2027. The project is on track for completion by the summer of 2031, marking a crucial timeline for local stakeholders and the community.
This development underscores the ongoing commitment of Metro Vancouver and Graham to enhance crucial infrastructure while prioritizing environmental protection and community well-being.
