Groundbreaking for Affordable Housing Development in Ottawa's Lowertown

The 200 Beausoleil project in Ottawa's Lowertown neighbourhood breaks ground, promising 159 affordable rental homes by 2028 under the Build Canada Homes initiative.

OTTAWA – The groundbreaking ceremony for 200 Beausoleil, an affordable housing project located in Ottawa's Lowertown neighbourhood, marks a significant milestone as one of the inaugural developments under the Government of Canada’s Build Canada Homes initiative. This project aims to repurpose an existing parking structure into a modern 20-storey building dedicated to affordable housing. The design features a six-storey podium and will consist of 159 one- and two-bedroom rental units, including 32 homes that are fully accessible.
Leading the charge for this development is Ottawa Community Housing, with Laurin Construction appointed as the construction partner. The architectural design is being executed by the collaboration of Diamond Schmitt Architects and KWC Architects. Residents will benefit from a variety of building amenities, including a wellness centre, games room, arts and activity room, an exterior terrace, and ground-level amenity space, all aimed at fostering a community atmosphere.
In line with contemporary sustainability standards, the building is designed using Passive House principles. It integrates solar energy and features barrier-free designs to promote both sustainability and accessibility. The structure will be an all-electric facility, eliminating any onsite fossil fuel combustion, which is expected to significantly lower ongoing heating and cooling energy costs.
The anticipated completion date for the 200 Beausoleil project is set for 2028. Financial backing for the development includes up to $63 million from the federal government, which comprises funding from both the Build Canada Homes initiative and the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation. This project has been recognized as one of the priority developments under the federal partnership with the City of Ottawa, emphasizing its importance within the community.
With a focus on long-term affordability, 200 Beausoleil is positioned to make a substantial impact on the local housing market, addressing the pressing need for affordable rental options in Ottawa. As this project progresses, it will serve as a benchmark for future developments in the region.
