Industry Feedback Requested for 24 Sussex Restoration Project

Public Services and Procurement Canada is seeking feedback on the RFQ for the restoration of the 24 Sussex residence, with a design proposal announcement scheduled for Canada Day 2027.

OTTAWA — Public Services and Procurement Canada (PSPC) is actively soliciting input from the construction industry regarding the Request for Qualifications (RFQ) related to the restoration of the historic 24 Sussex residence. This initiative follows the announcement made by Prime Minister Mark Carney in June, which outlined plans to revitalize the prime minister's residence in Ottawa through a national design competition alongside a fundraising campaign. The Prime Minister indicated that the winning design proposal is expected to be revealed by Canada Day 2027.
The 24 Sussex mansion, which boasts 35 rooms, was originally constructed between 1867 and 1868 as a private residence. It was repurposed in 1949 to serve as the official residence for the Prime Minister of Canada but has been out of use since 2015 due to significant structural concerns. Since then, the National Capital Commission has invested hundreds of thousands of dollars in maintenance efforts for 24 Sussex. In 2022, the building was closed by the National Capital Commission, citing “health and safety reasons,” which included reports of a rat infestation.
In light of these developments, PSPC is inviting industry professionals with relevant experience to review the RFQ and contribute their feedback. The focus is particularly on contractor requirements, the procurement strategy, and ways to enhance participation from a broad spectrum of the Canadian construction industry.
