Manitoba to Adopt Year-Round Daylight Time Following Resident Survey

Manitoba Premier Wab Kinew announces the province will stick with daylight time year-round based on a recent survey indicating public preference.

WINNIPEG — Premier Wab Kinew of Manitoba has declared that residents will no longer need to adjust their clocks, as the province has decided to maintain daylight time throughout the year. This decision follows a survey conducted with 72,000 residents, revealing that 58 percent favored keeping central daylight time, while around 34 percent preferred standard time year-round. Kinew expressed, "We heard from Manitobans loud and clear – no more changing the clocks in Manitoba," during a statement on Thursday. He highlighted that this change will alleviate the twice-yearly clock adjustments that families typically face each spring and fall. Starting this November, residents can expect their clocks to remain unchanged.
The adoption of permanent daylight time will result in extended evening daylight during the winter months; however, it will also lead to darker conditions for those heading to school and work in the mornings. Kinew had previously indicated a preference for central standard time year-round, citing potential health benefits associated with increased morning light. Earlier this year, both Alberta and British Columbia announced their transitions to permanent daylight time, with Alberta's shift aligning it year-round with Saskatchewan, a province that has not altered its time since 1966.
Had Manitoba chosen to implement standard time year-round, it would have aligned with the other Prairie provinces. The Winnipeg Chamber of Commerce's CEO, Loren Remillard, has praised the move to permanent daylight time, stating, "More daylight in the evening means more opportunity for restaurants, retailers, farmers, and communities across our province to make the most of the day." This statement underscores the potential economic benefits that increased evening light could provide to various sectors within the province.
