Ontario Expands Emergency Response Network with OSSGA Partnership

The Ontario government has partnered with the Ontario Stone, Sand and Gravel Association to enhance emergency response capabilities by leveraging construction resources during crises.

In Bracebridge, the Ontario government has made a significant announcement regarding the expansion of the Ontario Corps, which is now incorporating the Ontario Stone, Sand and Gravel Association (OSSGA) as its latest partner. This alliance aims to enhance emergency response efforts by utilizing the expertise and construction equipment available through OSSGA's members during times of crisis. In situations such as flooding or other natural disasters, OSSGA will be able to mobilize its members to provide essential construction equipment, including excavators, bulldozers, trucks, snow removal machinery, portable generators, and pumps. Such resources can be crucial for a variety of emergency-related tasks, including flood mitigation, debris cleanup, restoration efforts, and the transportation of supplies.
The Ontario Corps has a track record of being deployed during emergencies, having previously supported response efforts during the recent summer flooding in the Niagara Region as well as throughout the wildland fire season of 2026. The integration of OSSGA into the Ontario Corps expands the network of partners dedicated to responding quickly and effectively to emergencies.
OSSGA joins an impressive list of collaborators, which includes the Chartered Professional Accountants of Ontario, The Home Depot Canada, Labatt Breweries of Canada, Niagara College, Ontario Chamber of Commerce, Ontario Mine Rescue, the Ontario Road Builders’ Association, and Uber Canada. This coalition is designed to be mobilized within a 24 to 72-hour timeframe, allowing them to assist communities that are severely affected by emergencies. The resources at their disposal include not only personnel but also debris removal tools, supplies, flood barriers, and drones, as indicated in the official release.
Additionally, the Ontario government is planning to establish a new Emergency Preparedness and Response Headquarters, which will serve as the operational base for Ontario Corps. This facility is intended to be equipped with the necessary technology to support emergency management, functioning as a 24/7 command center throughout the year.
The OSSGA itself is a not-for-profit industry association that represents over 280 producers and suppliers of stone, sand, and gravel. Collectively, these members are responsible for supplying the majority of the approximately 164 million tonnes of aggregate utilized annually in Ontario. This partnership not only enhances the province's emergency response capabilities but also underscores the vital role that the construction industry plays in supporting community resilience during crises.
