Ontario Government Advances Highway 69 Widening with CN Rail Line Relocation

The Ontario government is moving forward with the widening of Highway 69, including the relocation of a CN rail line to facilitate the project.

CRANBERRY, ONT. — The Ontario government is taking significant steps to widen Highway 69 from two to four lanes, a project that holds considerable importance for the region's infrastructure. As part of this initiative, the province is investing in the relocation of a rail line operated by the Canadian National Railway Company (CN) within the Township of Mowat and the Municipality of Killarney. Prabmeet Sarkaria, the minister of transportation, emphasized the project's priority, stating, "Widening Highway 69 is a priority project for our government and we intend to use every tool at our disposal to accelerate this critical work." He further noted that the relocation of the CN rail line is crucial for the construction of a new interchange at Highway 522, a pivotal element of the highway’s expansion. The project encompasses the remaining 68 kilometres of Highway 69 that needs to be widened between Parry Sound and Sudbury. This section will be divided into six segments, with four of them expected to be under significant construction by the end of the following year. The relocation efforts will involve various tasks including grading, laying new tracks, installing signals, and reconnecting the new rail line to existing infrastructure. Once these preliminary tasks are completed, work can commence on the new interchange at Highway 522, which will be integral to the expanded Highway 69. To date, the Ontario government has successfully completed the widening of 84 kilometres of the total 152-kilometre corridor that stretches from 17 kilometres north of Parry Sound to 67 kilometres south of Sudbury. This ongoing investment reflects the government’s commitment to enhancing transportation infrastructure in Ontario.
