Progress Update on CAMH's Waverley House Project as Construction Advances

Infrastructure Ontario has reported significant progress on the Waverley House Secure Care and Recovery Building, part of the CAMH project in Toronto, with construction now at level eight.

Infrastructure Ontario (IO) has recently issued a progress update regarding the Waverley House Secure Care and Recovery Building project, which is being carried out by PCL Constructors Canada Inc. As of now, construction has advanced to level eight, with ongoing structural and waterproofing tasks being completed on both the exterior and interior of the building. Current construction activities include forming, rebar, and concrete work, along with utility installations and the restoration of a heritage wall and shed.
The Waverley House building is situated on the Queen Street West campus in Toronto and is designed to replace the outdated facilities currently used by the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH) for patients who face complex mental health issues and have had interactions with the legal system. This new seven-storey facility will house 234 patient beds and will include clinics aimed at community-based care, as well as therapeutic spaces focused on recovery. Additionally, the building will feature secure outdoor areas designated for treatment, which encompass porches, shared unit terraces, and two expansive terraces intended for recreational programming.
Notably, the development of Waverley House is part of a larger project that includes the construction of the Temerty Discovery Centre. In June, a significant milestone was celebrated with a topping off ceremony that marked the completion of the final steel beams for both structures. The Temerty Discovery Centre has been named in honor of a generous $75-million donation from the Temerty Foundation, while Waverley House acknowledges support totaling $203 million from Bruce McKean and the Waverley House Foundation.
Construction of the Waverley House commenced in March 2024, with the anticipated opening of the Temerty Discovery Centre slated for late 2027, while the Waverley House is expected to be completed in 2029. This project represents a significant investment in mental health infrastructure, aiming to enhance the quality of care available to individuals with complex needs.
