Stantec Appoints New Leaders for Buildings and Water Business Units

Stantec has appointed Jon Sylvie to lead its buildings practice and Kari Shively to oversee its water business, enhancing leadership across key sectors.

EDMONTON – Stantec, a prominent design and engineering firm, has made significant leadership changes within its North American operations, appointing Jon Sylvie and Kari Shively to head its buildings and water business units, respectively. Sylvie, who has an extensive background in architecture and engineering, will lead a diverse team focused on delivering high-performance spaces across various sectors including advanced manufacturing, airports, arts and culture, civic, commercial, education, federal buildings, health, industrial, mission-critical facilities, science and technology, and workplace environments. The buildings practice boasts a workforce of over 5,500 employees across North America and aims to achieve a net revenue target of $1.69 billion.
Jon Sylvie, a veteran of the Army with 21 years of service and more than 14 years in the architecture and engineering (A/E) sector, brings a wealth of experience in business development, project delivery, client relationship management, and team development. Expressing his vision, Sylvie stated, “Buildings shape the way people live, work, learn, and connect every day. We have an opportunity to bring Stantec’s wide-ranging expertise together to create beautifully designed places that perform well today and are ready for what’s ahead.” He emphasized his enthusiasm for collaborating with teams across North America to leverage their strengths and enhance value for clients.
Effective October 1, Kari Shively will take charge of Stantec’s water business, which stands as one of the firm’s largest and most diverse practices. This team is tasked with providing comprehensive planning, engineering, design, and advisory services aimed at addressing critical issues related to water supply, treatment, wastewater management, stormwater systems, flooding, and resilience. Shively comes with over 33 years of experience in the water sector and has a proven track record in leading complex, multidisciplinary teams that tackle increasing demands on water infrastructure and resources.
In her new role as the business unit leader for water, Shively will oversee a team of 2,500 employees and target a net revenue of $970 million. She remarked, “Water is at the heart of every community. Whether securing a new supply, creating energy from waste streams, or advancing leading practices in water reuse, we help communities steward one of their most essential resources.” Shively highlighted Stantec’s technical expertise and collaborative approach, expressing her eagerness to work with her teams and clients to provide reliable water solutions that contribute to resilient and sustainable communities.
