The City of Toronto has expanded its CampTO summer recreation program to include a nutritious snack initiative, benefiting up to 115,000 children this summer.
On June 29, 2026, Mayor Olivia Chow made a special visit to the Parkway Forest Community Centre to engage with campers on the inaugural day of the City of Toronto's CampTO summer recreation program. During her visit, the Mayor participated in one of the day's highlights—snack time—alongside the children. This year, CampTO aims to provide a free, nutritious mid-morning snack for up to 115,000 children, ensuring they remain energized throughout their camp activities. The initiative builds on the success of last year's pilot program and is part of a broader effort by the City to enhance food security and alleviate some of the financial pressures families are facing due to the increasing cost of living. To support this initiative, the City has allocated a significant investment of $500,000 from the 2026 Operating Budget to implement the CampTO Nutrition Program across all summer camp locations.
CampTO, which runs from late June until the end of August, offers a variety of recreational experiences tailored for children and youth aged four to 16. The program is designed to promote physical activity, skill development, social interaction, and the creation of lasting memories in a safe, welcoming, and inclusive environment.
In her remarks, Mayor Chow emphasized the importance of healthy food access for children: "Every child deserves a great summer. When children have access to healthy food, they can learn, play, and engage. That’s why I’m proud that every child enrolled in the City’s CampTO programs will receive a free, nutritious snack this summer. By investing in free recreation and nutritious food, we’re helping families with the cost of living while making sure every child has a fair opportunity to participate, stay energized, and enjoy everything CampTO has to offer."
