Transport Canada Awards $32 Million Contract for Movable Transfer Bridge Replacement at Souris Ferry Terminal

Dexter Construction has secured a $32 million contract from Transport Canada for the replacement of the movable transfer bridge at the Souris ferry terminal, a vital link for transportation to the Magdalen Islands.

Transport Canada has entrusted Dexter Construction, a Bedford, Nova Scotia-based firm, with a significant $32 million contract aimed at replacing the movable transfer bridge situated at the Souris ferry terminal on Prince Edward Island. This bridge plays a crucial role in connecting the ferry service to the terminal, facilitating the boarding and disembarking of both passengers and vehicles, as outlined in an official release. The Souris ferry terminal serves as the primary gateway for year-round ferry operations to Cap-aux-Meules, Quebec, which is essential for transporting various goods, including medical supplies, to the remote Magdalen Islands. Annually, the ferry service accommodates approximately 135,000 passengers and nearly 59,000 vehicles, underscoring its importance to the region's connectivity and economy. Immediate commencement of design work for the new movable transfer bridge is expected, with construction slated to begin later this year. The newly designed bridge is projected to be completed by the summer of 2028. In order to ensure uninterrupted ferry operations during the construction phase, a fixed transfer bridge has already been constructed. The process leading to the contract award began with a request for proposals released in April, culminating in the contract award in July. The project is part of the Ferry Services Contribution Program, which Transport Canada administers to support three critical interprovincial ferry services that bolster regional mobility and the economy across Atlantic Canada and eastern Quebec. Collectively, these federally supported ferry services contribute roughly $265 million to the Canadian economy each year.
