Vancouver's Bid for Major League Baseball Franchise Gains Momentum with The Show Vancouver Bid Corporation
📅 2 weeks ago
The City of Vancouver has partnered with The Show Vancouver Bid Corporation to explore the possibility of bringing a Major League Baseball franchise to the city, marking a significant step forward in the bid process.
The City of Vancouver is taking a significant step towards securing a Major League Baseball (MLB) franchise, with the announcement that The Show Vancouver Bid Corporation (TSV) has been selected as the preferred partner. This decision comes after a thorough evaluation process initiated by the city following a Request for Expressions of Interest (RFEOI) that was directed by the City Council in April 2026. The goal of this RFEOI was to find a capable ownership group with the expertise and financial resources necessary to pursue an MLB expansion franchise for Vancouver. The evaluation of TSV's submission was based on specific criteria set forth by the City, which included financial capacity, relevant expertise, governance structure, and the proposed strategies for securing a franchise. With the evaluation phase now complete, the City Council has instructed staff to draft a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with TSV. This MOU will facilitate collaboration between the two parties moving forward, particularly in assessing potential locations for a new ballpark, while TSV will assume all costs and financial risks associated with advancing the bid.
Importantly, the City has clarified that no decisions have yet been made regarding the establishment of a franchise, the location of a ballpark, or any related developments. Any future agreements, site selections, land use decisions, development approvals, or lease arrangements will still require the consideration and approval of the City Council.
Zack Ross, the President of Cape Group, which is a multigenerational real estate company based in Vancouver and the founder of TSV, expressed his excitement over this development. He emphasized Vancouver's potential as a suitable city for an MLB team, stating, "Vancouver is my home and it is one of the great cities in the world, and we deserve a Major League Baseball team." Ross envisions the franchise as part of a broader development initiative that would include a landmark ballpark and mixed-use real estate, aiming to create a vibrant community asset that fosters economic activity and civic pride.
Ross further articulated that the envisioned ballpark would serve as more than just a venue for baseball games, asserting, "MLB in Vancouver will showcase our city's global character to the world. But first and foremost, this is a community asset, and we will always act as its steward." His comments reflect a commitment to ensuring that the franchise aligns with Vancouver's values, particularly regarding reconciliation, affordable housing, sustainability, local job creation, and accessibility for youth in British Columbia and Western Canada.
The timeline for this initiative aligns with the MLB's own ambitions for expansion. Commissioner Rob Manfred has indicated a desire to grow the league from 30 to 32 teams before his retirement in 2029, citing Vancouver as a viable city for a new franchise. TSV has assembled a strong leadership team to support the bid, which includes BRS Sports, LLC, comprised of seasoned professionals in sports franchise and facility development. Notable members include Jac Sperling, who has extensive experience in launching professional sports expansions and advising on team transactions, Ray Baker, who has served on various boards overseeing major sports facilities, and Tim Romani, who has managed over $20 billion in venue development projects.
The bid has also garnered support from influential figures, including former Vancouver mayor and British Columbia premier Mike Harcourt, who underscored the importance of this initiative for the city. "I wholeheartedly support TSV's efforts to bring a Major League Baseball (MLB) team to Vancouver," he stated, highlighting that this first step could enhance Vancouver's reputation as a desirable place to live and work.
As the City and TSV move forward, the focus will remain on collaboration and community engagement, with the overarching goal of establishing a Major League Baseball presence in Vancouver that benefits both the city and its residents for generations to come.
