The City of Vaughan, Ontario, has officially sanctioned the Toromont Master Plan, a significant redevelopment initiative poised to transform a 27-acre site located along Highway 7 in the Vaughan Metropolitan Centre (VMC). This ambitious project, designed by WZMH Architects, will be situated on the property currently owned by Toromont Industries and encompasses the construction of 17 towers, including an impressive landmark 73-storey tower. The development is expected to yield more than 9,950 residential units distributed across four distinct development blocks. The Toromont Master Plan will deliver approximately 784,561 square meters of residential space, complemented by a mix of office spaces, hotels, retail outlets, and community-oriented facilities. Additionally, the project incorporates 1.60 hectares of new parkland, which will feature Millway Linear Park and Central Park. A significant aspect of the development is its direct access to the VMC subway station, enhancing public transit connectivity. Furthermore, the project will provide substantial cycling infrastructure, including over 8,000 bicycle parking spaces.
The master plan is structured to be executed in four phases, with the initial phase set to introduce more than 3,294 residential units, office spaces, and the first segments of the new park network. Len Abelman, principal at WZMH, expressed enthusiasm regarding the project's approval, highlighting the collaborative efforts that brought this vision to fruition. Abelman stated, "We are delighted to have designed and help guide this project through to its final approval. We are also incredibly proud of the collaborative effort between our team, Toromont Industries, the City of Vaughan and council, and the many consultants and stakeholders who helped bring this vision forward. We are excited to see the project move toward realization and contribute to Vaughan’s continued growth as a vibrant urban centre."
The approval of the Toromont Master Plan marks a significant milestone for Vaughan, paving the way for substantial urban development and contributing to the city’s evolution as a dynamic urban center. As the project progresses, it is anticipated to create a thriving community that not only provides residential options but also enhances the overall infrastructure and livability of the area.
