PCL Reflects on BMO Field's Evolution Ahead of 2026 FIFA World Cup

PCL Construction revisits the history and renovations of BMO Field, the venue for the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup, highlighting its partnerships and advancements over the years.

TORONTO – BMO Field, located at 170 Princes Blvd, Toronto, ON, is recognized as Canada’s national soccer stadium and serves as a crucial venue for Major League Soccer and CFL football. As it prepares to host matches for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, the stadium has undergone significant renovations, with a project value of $246 million currently under construction. PCL Construction, which has a storied history with the venue, recently reflected on its evolution from its initial construction to its latest upgrades.
The stadium's journey began in 2006 when Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment (MLSE) decided to erect a facility for the upcoming 2007 U-20 World Cup and launch a new soccer franchise. Exhibition Place was chosen as the ideal site for this ambitious project, and PCL Construction was selected as the design-builder, a decision rooted in their previous collaboration with MLSE on the Air Canada Centre. Bruce Sonnenberg, who was the construction manager during the original build, recalled the high-profile nature of the project and the challenges posed by a tight construction schedule.
"It was a very high-profile project," Sonnenberg stated. "We had to ensure that it was completed by June 2007, and we faced complications, including unexpected findings during excavation that revealed remnants of the old Exhibition Stadium. This added layers of complexity to our groundwork. I was confident we would meet our deadlines and budget, and we did."
Over nearly two decades, soccer's popularity in Ontario and across Canada has surged, prompting the need for expansions at BMO Field. PCL was called back for various renovations, including the addition of a second deck on the east side and an extensive three-piece canopy. Ed Sceviour, a superintendent from the original build, recounted the intricate process of installing the canopies, which involved lifting substantial sections using tandem cranes, showcasing the engineering and logistical challenges involved.
The renovations also marked a significant milestone as BMO Field welcomed the Toronto Argonauts, increasing the stadium’s capacity to 30,000 and adding new suites and amenities. The venue even hosted the 104th Grey Cup in 2016. Recently, PCL has returned once more to execute further renovations in anticipation of the World Cup. These updates include enhanced seating, a new VIP lounge, refreshed suites, and advanced technology such as high-resolution LED videoboards and a state-of-the-art sound system.
Stephanie Jones, program lead for MLSE, emphasized the transformative nature of these renovations. "The game presentation has reached a whole new level. It feels as if we have a brand-new stadium, equipped with cutting-edge venue technology that ensures an unparalleled experience for our fans, regardless of where they sit,” she remarked.
While PCL recognizes the importance of adhering to schedules and budgets, the relationship forged with MLSE transcends mere transactional dynamics. Sonnenberg noted, "Our partnership is built on trust and shared passion for sports and improvement. The PCL team has always been engaged beyond construction; they take pride in the venue and its upkeep, often going above and beyond, such as ensuring the site is clean before matches."
Reflecting on the emotional connection to stadiums, Sonnenberg added, "There’s something truly special about stadiums. The energy and excitement shared with fans elevate the entire experience." PCL has also produced a video commemorating the history and renovations of BMO Field, capturing its journey and significance as the World Cup approaches.
