The Town of Whitby has officially taken over operations of its new recreation center, which is set to open on September 12, 2023.
WHITBY, ONT. – The Town of Whitby has officially assumed operations of its impressive $154.9 million recreation facility, with final preparations underway for a grand opening scheduled for September 12, 2023. This milestone marks the substantial completion of construction on the town’s largest recreational project, allowing the commissioning phase to commence. This phase includes the installation of equipment and furnishings, staff training, and final activities to ensure operational readiness.The development of this complex has been a collaborative effort, shaped by years of planning and community engagement aimed at accommodating Whitby’s expanding population. Strategically located west of Baldwin Street South and south of Highway 407, the facility spans approximately 15,200 square meters and is designed to be a central hub for recreation, sports, and community interaction.
The architectural design was executed by Perkins + Will, while construction was carried out by Ledcor. The facility features an aquatic center that boasts a 25-meter, 10-lane pool, alongside a separate leisure pool and a second-floor spectator viewing area, positioning it as home to the largest pool in the Durham Region.
In addition to the aquatic amenities, the recreation center includes a double gymnasium equipped with a three-lane indoor walking track, and a twin-pad arena with ice pads measuring 85 feet by 190 feet. These facilities are intended to support a variety of community programs, meetings, and cultural activities, further enhancing the community connection that the project aims to foster.
As operations transition to the town, the focus will shift to ensuring that the facility is fully equipped and that staff are prepared to welcome the community on the opening day. The grand opening is expected to be a significant event, reflecting the culmination of extensive planning and community input that shaped this landmark project.
