Bird Construction Reports Progress on $1.7 Billion Bell AI Data Centre Project in Sherwood, Saskatchewan

Bird Construction has announced significant advancements in the construction of Bell AI Fabric's 300 MW data centre in Sherwood, Saskatchewan, with a peak workforce of 425 personnel and plans for further growth.

In Sherwood, Saskatchewan, Bird Construction has shared an update on the Bell AI Fabric's ambitious 300 MW data centre project. As reported in a recent LinkedIn post, the project, which carries an investment of $1.7 billion, has reached a milestone with a peak workforce of 425 personnel currently engaged on the site. Construction activity is progressing across all four buildings that comprise the facility, with noteworthy advancements being made in the underground infrastructure, foundations, and structural elements of the project.
As the construction phase intensifies, Bird Construction anticipates that the workforce will expand further in the upcoming months. The project has also seen the involvement of Alton Tangedal Architect Ltd. (ATAL), based in Regina, who has been designated as the Architect of Record. Additionally, George Gordon Developments Ltd. (GGDL) has been tasked with providing essential site services.
Previously, Bird Construction announced the participation of several local contractors from Saskatchewan in the earlier stages of construction, which includes Hipperson Construction, a Regina-based firm.
The project is set to feature the commissioning of two data halls in the first half of 2027, followed by the completion of two additional data halls in the latter half of the same year. Once completed, this facility will hold the distinction of being the largest purpose-built data centre in Canada. The economic implications for the province are significant, with projections indicating that the project could generate up to $12 billion in economic value, alongside the creation of 800 temporary construction jobs.
In a strategic move, Bell has formalized a long-term partnership with Bird Construction for the development of the AI data centre. Under this agreement, Bird will act as Bell's preferred construction partner, establishing a framework for collaboration on potential future AI data centre projects that would support Bell AI Fabric's nationwide expansion. This partnership underscores the growing importance of data infrastructure within Canada’s technological landscape and the anticipated demand for such facilities in the coming years.
