In a significant move to bolster Indigenous participation in Ontario's energy sector, the provincial government has unveiled plans to fund 148 projects through the 2025 intake of the Indigenous Energy Support Program (IESP). This initiative is part of a broader strategy to enhance community engagement and energy initiatives across the province. The Ontario government is committing a total of $25 million, which will be managed by the Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO). The funding is earmarked for various projects focused on strengthening the role of Indigenous communities in the growing energy landscape of Ontario.The funding is divided into three distinct Areas of Funding (AOF). The first area, Capacity Building, is aimed at supporting educational and awareness initiatives, promoting energy skills development, and facilitating the hiring of a Community Energy Champion. This role is crucial for leveraging energy opportunities within Indigenous communities.
The second area, Economic Development, seeks to promote equitable access to project partnerships and the development of energy infrastructure. Notably, the IESO has expanded this area to include an enhanced Remote Projects Development stream. This new initiative is particularly focused on advancing diesel reduction and energy transition objectives in nine identified off-grid First Nation communities, thereby addressing critical energy needs in these regions.
The third area, Energy Resiliency and Monitoring, focuses on the development and updating of community energy plans and initiatives, ensuring that communities can effectively manage their energy resources and strategies.
As part of this initiative, applications for 2026 funding have already opened, with a deadline set for October 2. This early opening allows communities ample time to prepare and submit their proposals, fostering a proactive approach to energy management and development.
