A devastating wildfire in British Columbia has led to the destruction of homes and forced thousands to evacuate, with significant property losses reported.
PENTICTON, B.C. – Kyla Gaudiuso discovered the tragic fate of her home in Faulder, B.C., when she received a harrowing image showing the ridge where her house once stood, now consumed by flames. The region, situated to the west of Summerland, was among the first to be impacted by the Bald Range wildfire, a disaster that has resulted in one confirmed death and compelled the evacuation of over 20,000 residents in the Okanagan Lake area. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) reported that an 80-year-old woman lost her life while attempting to flee her home in Meadow Valley, located west of Summerland, during the chaotic weekend. On Saturday, the government of British Columbia declared a provincial state of emergency, acknowledging the extent of property losses, although specific details remain limited. Gaudiuso has not yet received official confirmation regarding her home’s status, but the photograph left her with little doubt about its destruction. Her residence is among dozens in Faulder believed to have been engulfed by the wildfire, with footage revealing that the small village, which has a population of around 215, has been reduced to smoldering debris. The scene was described by Gaudiuso as one of utter chaos, as residents became aware of the advancing flames and began to evacuate, a situation she referred to as 'pandemonium.' Fortunately, she managed to reach safety and is currently staying with a friend in Penticton. However, she expressed a desire for the fire to be contained soon so she could assess the damage to her property firsthand. 'I would love to just see like a picture or know for sure like what’s left on our property because I’m kind of one of those people, it doesn’t really seem real,' Gaudiuso shared in an interview. 'I have to see it to believe it.' According to the BC Wildfire Service, the fire has expanded to approximately 136 square kilometers and continues to burn out of control near Summerland, a community with a population of 12,000 that has been ordered to evacuate. Around 10,000 homes are currently under evacuation orders in Summerland, Peachland, and the regional districts of Okanagan-Similkameen and Central Okanagan, as well as on lands belonging to the Penticton Indian Band. Additionally, over 3,200 homes are facing lower-level evacuation alerts that extend northward past Peachland to Highway 97C and southward past Penticton along the city’s western borders.
