Weyerhaeuser Company Limited has been fined $355,000 following a workplace fatality at a lumber mill near Grande Prairie. The penalty will support a new safety training program for workers in multiple sectors.
In a significant legal development, Weyerhaeuser Company Limited has been penalized $355,000 in connection with a tragic workplace fatality that occurred in 2023. The company, which operates in the forest products sector, pleaded guilty to one count under the Occupational Health and Safety Act on May 19 at the Grande Prairie Court of Justice. This case stems from an incident that took place on November 18, 2023, at a lumber mill located near Grande Prairie, Alberta, where a worker lost their life while attempting to clear an obstruction from a machine using a pike pole. Unfortunately, the pole was ejected from the machine and struck the worker, leading to the fatal outcome. As part of the court's ruling, the Crown withdrew an additional twelve counts against the company. In an innovative sentencing approach, the court has mandated that the financial penalty be allocated to Northwestern Polytechnic. These funds will be utilized to establish the Northern Industrial Safety Pathways Program, designed to provide structured training and tuition support for new and inexperienced employees across various sectors, including forestry, oil and gas, manufacturing, mining, and agriculture. Both Weyerhaeuser and the Crown have a 30-day window to appeal the conviction or the imposed penalty, indicating that the legal proceedings may not be concluded yet. This ruling highlights the ongoing challenges related to workplace safety within the forestry industry and underscores the importance of stringent safety protocols to protect workers in hazardous environments.
