New Temporary Housing Initiative Announced for North Vancouver's Homeless Population

The Province of B.C. and the District of North Vancouver are collaborating to establish temporary homes for the homeless, with a focus on community support and safety.

In a significant move to address homelessness in the North Vancouver area, the Province of British Columbia has teamed up with the District of North Vancouver to create new temporary housing solutions for individuals facing homelessness. BC Housing, alongside the District, is currently evaluating the possibility of placing up to 40 temporary homes on a vacant site located at 1182 Welch St. This initiative is part of a broader program known as the Homelessness Encampment Action Response Team (HEART) and its associated component, the Homelessness Encampment Action Response Temporary Housing (HEARTH) program.
According to an official release, these proposed temporary residences will be geared towards adults in the North Vancouver community who are either experiencing homelessness or are at risk of becoming homeless. The initiative underscores a community-based approach, where BC Housing and the operator, Lookout Housing and Health Society, will tailor temporary housing solutions to meet the individual needs of residents and the available support services.
In terms of support, Lookout Housing and Health Society is set to provide a comprehensive range of services for residents, which will include a minimum of three staff members on-site 24/7, the provision of two meals per day, skills training, and referrals for health and community support services. Furthermore, to enhance safety and security, the temporary housing site will be equipped with fencing, camera monitoring, and a controlled single point of entry, as detailed in the release.
These temporary homes are intended to serve as a transitional solution while the construction of new permanent supportive housing is underway within the community. The HEART and HEARTH initiatives are supported by a coalition of local governments, with 16 municipalities collaborating with the provincial government to implement these programs.
Phase one of the initiative includes communities such as Abbotsford, Campbell River, Chilliwack, and Cheam First Nation (for HEARTH only), as well as Duncan (for HEARTH only), Kamloops, Kelowna, Nanaimo, Prince George, Victoria, and Vancouver. Meanwhile, phase two introduces new partnerships with communities including Cranbrook, New Westminster, North Vancouver, Powell River, Smithers, and Squamish.
This partnership reflects a strategic effort by local and provincial authorities to combat homelessness and to provide immediate support to vulnerable populations within North Vancouver and beyond. The project not only addresses urgent housing needs but also aims to foster community integration and support systems for those affected by homelessness.
