Temporary UFC Cage Construction Begins on White House Lawn for 250th Anniversary Celebration

Construction crews are erecting a temporary octagon-shaped cage on the South Lawn of the White House for a UFC event next month, marking the nation’s 250th anniversary and President Trump's 80th birthday.
In a notable addition to the ongoing series of construction projects at the White House, crews have commenced work on a temporary octagon-shaped cage set to host a UFC bout next month. This initiative is part of the celebrations marking the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence and coincides with President Donald Trump’s 80th birthday. The event is scheduled for June 14 and online renderings have been released, showcasing what the completed venue will look like. The fight space will be enclosed by a wire-mesh fence and surrounded by a stage adorned in red, white, and blue, featuring an arch decorated with stars and stripes, as well as two large screens broadcasting the fights live.Thousands of temporary seats will be arranged around the cage, including ringside allocations for a full marching band, setting the stage for a vibrant atmosphere. Trump has emphasized that the UFC project will culminate in a 5,000-seat arena right outside the White House. Additionally, large screens will be placed in the nearby Ellipse park to accommodate an expected influx of spectators, with the UFC planning to distribute up to 85,000 free tickets for the event.
Trump has remarked on the immense demand for these tickets, stating, "I have never seen anybody want anything so much as people want those tickets," highlighting the anticipated excitement surrounding the UFC fight.
The card, however, has faced criticism from fans online for being underwhelming, featuring only two championship matches. Brazilian fighter Alex Pereira is set to face France’s Ciryl Gane for the interim UFC heavyweight title, while Spanish-Georgian lightweight champion Ilia Topuria will go against interim champ Justin Gaethje, who is one of the few Americans holding a share of the UFC’s championship belts.
This latest construction effort at the White House is part of a broader trend initiated by Trump, who has been actively involved in various renovations and additions to the historic building. His previous projects include significant alterations to the Rose Garden, the introduction of partisan plaques for a Presidential Walk of Fame, and renovations to the Lincoln Bedroom and Palm Room. Additionally, Trump has proposed repainting the Eisenhower Executive Office Building and constructing a 250-foot arch at the Lincoln Memorial, where weigh-ins for the upcoming UFC bout are also set to occur.
As the nation gears up to celebrate the semiquincentennial of its founding, this UFC event represents both a unique spectacle and a continuation of Trump's ambitious plans for the White House's physical legacy.
