Toronto, Ontario – October 27, 2026 – Aecon Group Inc. has announced that its Holdom Overpass Project, located in Burnaby, British Columbia, has achieved the prestigious Envision Platinum™ Award from the Institute for Sustainable Infrastructure (ISI). This award represents the highest level of recognition within the Envision sustainability framework, emphasizing the collaborative effort of the Aecon-Gateway Infrastructure Group General Partnership and the Vancouver Fraser Port Authority to provide infrastructure that yields enduring environmental, social, and economic benefits. The Envision framework, which is renowned globally, serves as a standard for assessing infrastructure projects through an independent verification process. It evaluates projects based on various criteria, including quality of life, environmental stewardship, climate resilience, resource efficiency, and the long-term benefits to the community.
Scott Marshall, Senior Vice President of Major Projects West at Aecon, expressed pride in the award, stating, "Receiving an Envision Platinum Award highlights the dedication of our team and partners and reinforces Aecon’s position at the forefront of implementing innovative and responsible construction solutions." He noted that this recognition reflects the high standards set for sustainable infrastructure delivery, which are designed to provide lasting benefits to local communities.
The Holdom Overpass Project, featuring a new four-lane overpass, aims to enhance safety, accessibility, and transportation efficiency while bolstering trade capacity through the Port of Vancouver, Canada’s largest port. The project encompasses a variety of improvements, including roadway enhancements, the establishment of a new pump station, and the replacement of an at-grade rail crossing with a multimodal transportation link. Additionally, it includes habitat restoration initiatives and the creation of public gathering spaces adorned with First Nation art.
The project’s recognition as an Envision Platinum initiative is backed by numerous sustainability efforts, such as recycling plastic construction waste via the Construction Plastics Initiative by Light House, implementing a comprehensive project-wide sustainability management system, and adhering to responsible procurement practices with performance tracking. Notably, approximately 84% of the construction waste generated by the project has been diverted from landfills, and emissions have been significantly reduced through the utilization of renewable diesel fuel (at 98% usage), hybrid power solutions, and electric vehicles. Furthermore, recycled materials constituted 13% of the project's purchased goods, surpassing the initial target of 5%, and the project’s Sustainable Procurement Policy achieved full compliance from all suppliers.
Prabh K. Banga, Vice President of Sustainability at Aecon, remarked, "While the award recognizes achievements realized to date, we remain focused on maintaining these standards through project completion." He emphasized Aecon's ongoing commitment to integrating sustainability into every aspect of project delivery.
This Envision Platinum designation for the Holdom Overpass Project further solidifies Aecon's history of delivering sustainable infrastructure solutions. The project joins other notable Aecon initiatives recognized under the Envision framework, such as the Gordie Howe International Bridge, which received Envision Platinum certification in 2021, and York Region’s 2nd Concession Project, which earned Envision Bronze certification in 2022.
Jennifer Natland, Vice President of Properties and Development at the Vancouver Fraser Port Authority, commented on the significance of the award, stating, "The Envision Platinum award builds on our proven track record of delivering high-quality, sustainable infrastructure that supports Canada’s trade needs while creating lasting benefits for communities and the environment." She noted that the Holdom Overpass Project exemplifies what can be achieved through effective collaboration with First Nations, the City of Burnaby, CN, the Government of Canada, and the design-build contractor Aecon-Gateway Infrastructure Group General Partnership.
