Broadway Subway Trackwork Completion Marks Milestone in Vancouver's $2.9 Billion Project

The completion of trackwork for the Broadway Subway project in Vancouver is a significant milestone as the project moves towards its completion in 2027.

VANCOUVER – The provincial government has announced that trackwork for the Broadway Subway will be finalized this week, representing a pivotal milestone in the $2.9 billion project that is projected to reach completion by 2027. This ambitious 5.7-kilometre endeavor will extend the Millennium Line from the VCC-Clark Station to Arbutus Street, featuring 700 metres of elevated guideway, five kilometers of tunnels, and the addition of six new underground stations.
As construction progresses, activities related to traffic-deck removal and corridor restoration are currently underway at various stations along Broadway. Notably, in August, crews successfully completed the removal of the traffic deck at the Broadway-City Hall Station. Work is now focused on installing utilities, backfilling the area above the station, and restoring both the street and sidewalks, according to a government release.
Since July, two blocks of West Broadway between Alberta and Cambie streets have been closed to vehicular traffic to facilitate this construction. A detour has been established via 8th Avenue for both transit and vehicles. However, pedestrian access to all businesses, services, and residences remains available throughout the duration of the work. It is anticipated that Broadway will fully reopen to vehicles by January 2027.
At Mount Pleasant Station, all driving lanes and newly widened sidewalks on East Broadway between Main and Quebec streets are now accessible to the public, as highlighted in the release. Once the project is completed, the travel time from VCC-Clark to Arbutus Station is expected to be reduced to just 11 minutes.
The Broadway Subway project is scheduled to commence passenger service in the fall of 2027. Funding for this significant infrastructure undertaking is being provided by multiple levels of government, with the Government of Canada contributing nearly $897 million, the Government of British Columbia contributing nearly $2 billion, and the City of Vancouver providing $100.3 million. Upon its opening, the subway will have the capacity to transport three times the number of passengers compared to the existing 99 B-Line service.
