THOMPSON, MAN. — Community members recently had the opportunity to explore the newly constructed terminal at Thompson Regional Airport in northern Manitoba during a public open house event. This 44,000-square-foot facility is set to replace the aging 14,000-square-foot terminal, marking a significant upgrade as part of a comprehensive $125-million redevelopment initiative at the airport. According to a recent announcement, operations from the new terminal are scheduled to commence on October 4, with an official grand opening planned for later in October. This event will include government representatives, Indigenous leaders, community partners, and stakeholders from across the northern region.
The Thompson Regional Airport plays a critical role in the region, accommodating around 120,000 passengers annually. Notably, over half of these travelers utilize the airport for medical appointments, underscoring its importance to healthcare access in the area. In addition to passenger services, the airport facilitates the movement of approximately 45 million pounds of freight each year to northern Manitoba and Nunavut. It serves as a vital link for passenger, cargo, and medevac services, connecting various communities throughout northern Manitoba.
