The construction of the Dave Barrett Extension to the Surrey Langley SkyTrain Project is progressing with the arrival of the Langley Launcher, marking a significant step in the project.

In Langley, British Columbia, the construction of the Dave Barrett Extension for the Surrey Langley SkyTrain Project is reaching an important milestone this week with the arrival of the 'Langley Launcher' gantry. This specialized construction equipment is integral to the ongoing development of the guideway, which is set to significantly enhance public transit in the region. According to a statement from Mike Farnworth, the province's minister of transportation and transit, the arrival of the Langley Launcher, along with the forthcoming deployment of the 'Surrey Sprinter' gantry, underscores the substantial progress being made on this vital transit initiative. 'With guideway construction steadily advancing, we’re maintaining strong momentum on this key transit project that will benefit people and communities south of the Fraser for years to come,' Farnworth remarked. The Langley Launcher, which is over 100 meters long and weighs more than 440 tonnes, has already constructed approximately three kilometers of the guideway, starting from the Hillcrest-184 Street Station. Its next task will involve building the guideway over Willowbrook Drive, followed by work at the Willowbrook Station site. Meanwhile, the Surrey Sprinter is expected to arrive at Green Timbers Station in the upcoming weeks, where it will commence guideway construction west of the station this fall. Additionally, the 'Fleetwood Flyer' gantry is projected to complete approximately three kilometers of guideway by October. The Dave Barrett Extension will consist of over 4,400 precast concrete segments, each weighing around 28 tonnes, to be installed along the planned 16-kilometer route, which is slated to open in 2029. As of now, guideway construction is about 65 percent complete, with foundation piles and columns exceeding 95 percent completion. The project is anticipated to create approximately 26,700 direct and indirect jobs throughout its duration. This extension will serve as part of the Expo Line, and is named in honor of former B.C. Premier Dave Barrett, who held office from 1972 to 1975. Upon completion, the extension is expected to drastically reduce travel time from Langley City Centre to King George Station, bringing it down to just 22 minutes, which is over 25 minutes faster than the current bus route.
