CGC Inc. Launches Operations at Little Narrows Quarry with First Gypsum Shipment

CGC Inc. has commenced operational commissioning at its Little Narrows quarry with the first shipment of gypsum rock, marking a significant milestone in the project's phased ramp-up towards full operations by spring 2027.

LITTLE NARROWS, N.S. — This week, CGC Inc., the Canadian arm of USG Corporation, celebrated a pivotal moment with the first shipment of gypsum rock from its quarry located in Little Narrows. This shipment marks the transition of the $104 million project from the construction phase into operational commissioning. During this commissioning phase, CGC will conduct tests and validations of its systems under real-world conditions as the site prepares for full-scale operations, which are anticipated to commence in the spring of 2027. The shipment follows the successful execution of the site’s inaugural blast and reflects ongoing advancements in essential infrastructure elements, such as the dock, ship-loader, and employee facilities. The quarry, positioned on the scenic Bras d’Or Lake, has undergone several significant upgrades, including the construction of a new 600-foot dock that can accommodate ocean-going vessels comparable in length to a football field, and a ship loader equipped with real-time quality sensors. Additionally, the site will implement simulation-driven mine planning and digital modeling, alongside progressive reclamation practices integrated into every operational stage. Erik Hinze, the plant manager at CGC Little Narrows, expressed pride in the quarry's legacy, stating, “The Little Narrows quarry has been part of Cape Breton’s history since 1954 and we’re proud to help write its next chapter.” He emphasized that this milestone is a testament to the dedication of the team and the backing of the local community, while also laying the groundwork for sustainable job creation and economic opportunities in the area. As operations scale up, the gypsum sourced from Little Narrows will supply CGC and USG manufacturing facilities throughout Eastern Canada and along the Eastern Seaboard, contributing to the production of building materials essential for home construction and infrastructure projects. Upon reaching full operational capacity, the quarry is expected to generate over 100 jobs. The Little Narrows project is a part of CGC and USG's broader investment strategy in Canada, which includes nearly $325 million committed in recent months, highlighted by a $210 million wallboard manufacturing plant that opened earlier this year in Wheatland County, Alberta.
