In Clinton, British Columbia, the aftermath of recent wildfires has prompted the village's mayor, Roland Stanke, to announce that an assessment crew is currently evaluating the damage caused by the fires. This development follows the evacuation of residents last week due to the escalating wildfire situation. Stanke took to social media to inform residents that those whose properties suffered damage will receive personal contact from assessors, emphasizing the importance of obtaining accurate information rather than relying on potentially misleading posts circulating on social media platforms like Facebook.
The mayor highlighted ongoing dangers, noting that smouldering embers are still present in the area, posing a risk of flare-ups. He issued a warning to residents who have chosen to ignore the evacuation order, stating that they are now required to boil their water. This precaution is necessary because a bypass in the reservoir has led to the use of untreated water in firefighting efforts.
As the situation continues to unfold, hydro crews are also on-site to assess damage to power infrastructure. Stanke explained that power restoration efforts cannot commence until the assessment is completed, as downed power lines remain a concern in the village, which has a population of approximately 650 residents.
The BC Wildfire Service has reported that there are currently over 135 active wildfires burning throughout the province of British Columbia, with more than 50 of these classified as out of control.
