MISSISSAUGA, ONT. – Trillium Health Partners (THP) has recently achieved a significant construction milestone for The Peter Gilgan Mississauga Hospital and Shah Family Hospital for Women and Children, with the official commencement of concrete pouring. This notable event was celebrated with a ceremonial coin toss involving government representatives, donors, and Team THP, a tradition that symbolizes good fortune. The coins were poured into the foundation of the future hospital, marking a pivotal moment in the project’s development, which comes roughly one year after breaking ground.In July 2025, ED+PCL Healthcare Partners secured a substantial $13.9 billion contract to design, build, finance, and maintain this ambitious project. The Peter Gilgan Mississauga Hospital and Shah Family Hospital for Women and Children are being crafted as a modern healthcare hub, aimed at integrating hospital services with primary care, home and community services, and long-term care offerings. According to a release, construction at the Mississauga Hospital site is progressing on schedule and within budget.
Key developments include the completion of over 78 percent of excavation work, with the site covering an impressive 250,000 square feet, equivalent to approximately 15 hockey rinks. The project has also seen the arrival of seven tower cranes on-site, while work on the concrete foundation, footings, walls, and columns has commenced. Additionally, a new roundabout is set to open off Bronte College Court this summer, improving access to all site entrances.
The project, which is designed as a 22-storey facility, is being executed through a progressive public-private partnership model. This approach is intended to encourage collaborative development concerning project requirements, design, pricing, scheduling, and risk management. The entire project encompasses a vast 2.8 million square feet and boasts several key features, including:
- Ontario’s first dedicated women and children’s hospital;
- More than 950 hospital beds;
- A full replacement of the existing hospital site;
- An expanded emergency department, which will rank among the largest in the province;
- A flexible surgical platform with an increased number of operating rooms equipped with specialized technology and advanced imaging systems;
