Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, is set to break ground on a $242 million multi-purpose arena that aims to enhance athletics and student life while generating economic benefits for the campus community.
Miami University, located in Oxford, Ohio, is gearing up to initiate construction on a new multi-purpose arena, a project valued at $242 million. This facility is expected to transform the university's athletic landscape, student engagement, and contribute to economic growth on campus, while addressing the limitations posed by the aging Millett Hall. The board of trustees at Miami University approved the new arena earlier this year, which will be built on Cook Field and is anticipated to be completed in time for the 2028 athletic season. This significant investment represents one of the largest capital expenditures in the university's history and is envisioned as more than just a venue for sports. The new arena will serve as the home for Miami’s basketball and volleyball teams and will also host a variety of events including commencements, concerts, creative arts performances, career fairs, and conferences, in addition to numerous student-oriented activities. David Sayler, the university's director of athletics, highlighted the importance of this development in a presentation to the board, stating, "We are in a unique and dynamic time for Miami University athletics. It is time to innovate, invest and inspire. A new arena benefits all of Miami and will serve as a gateway and beacon for the university."
In February, the board of trustees authorized the construction of the arena, with an expected construction cost of $242 million. However, they have allowed for a maximum expenditure of $281 million to cover the structure and any ancillary costs. Construction is slated to begin this fall, with the goal of completion set for 2028. The new arena is set to become a prominent symbol of Miami University’s long-term growth strategy.
Funding for the project will come from a combination of philanthropic contributions and bond financing, as part of a broader fundraising campaign initiated by the university. The decision on the location was made after careful consideration of several potential sites, with Cook Field being selected after a committee of faculty, staff, and alumni reviewed options and gathered input from over 1,500 community members. The chosen location, positioned at the intersection of State Route 73 and U.S. 27, promises not only improved access and traffic management but also the potential for an expanded entertainment and hospitality district.
The university envisions future connections to nearby hotels, restaurants, and other mixed-use developments that could attract visitors and create new revenue opportunities. The new arena is expected to alleviate issues that have long plagued Millett Hall, which was constructed in 1968 and originally designed solely for the men’s basketball program. The addition of women's basketball and volleyball programs has resulted in three teams sharing facilities that were not designed for such use. The new complex will feature two dedicated basketball practice courts and a separate volleyball arena, greatly enhancing training and competition space for student-athletes.
University officials have estimated that renovating Millett Hall and installing the necessary practice facilities would have cost at least $175 million and would have rendered the building unusable for several years, all while leaving the university with an aging facility that would require ongoing maintenance. Consequently, they have concluded that building a new arena offers greater long-term value and better support for student-athletes. Once the new arena is operational, Millett Hall will no longer serve as the primary athletic venue and will be repurposed for recreational and intramural activities, with its eventual demolition anticipated as part of a broader redevelopment initiative.
Miami University President Gregory Crawford stated, "A new arena will provide the foundation for an events district in the heart of the campus to benefit students, reinvigorate the community, and strengthen our local economy." Preparations for this transition have already begun, with a separate $13 million fund designated for new recreational facilities at the Millett Hall and Chestnut Fields sites. Plans for the Millett site include a new synthetic-turf field for intramural soccer and flag football, along with a walking path, exercise stations, pickleball courts, tennis courts, and basketball courts. Additional features such as a dog park and a dedicated service-dog park aim to create a comprehensive recreational hub for students and campus visitors.
The Chestnut Fields project will include a large synthetic-turf multi-use surface equipped with sports lighting to accommodate various activities, featuring two full-size soccer fields, two softball fields, and three flag football fields, along with concrete pathways and a central plaza with seating and drinking fountains. These recreational improvements are scheduled for completion before the closure of Cook Field for arena construction this September. The impact of the new arena will extend beyond athletics, as it will be capable of hosting concerts, conferences, graduations, and community events that have previously been unable to take place in Oxford due to a lack of appropriate facilities.
