Etobicoke Greenway Transmission Line Energized, Supporting Local Communities

The Etobicoke Greenway project, a new transmission line, has been successfully completed and energized, providing substantial electricity supply to western Toronto and surrounding areas.

ETOBICOKE, ONT. – The Etobicoke Greenway project, which features a 230-kilovolt transmission line extending 6.5 kilometres, is now fully energized. This line runs through an existing corridor that connects the Richview and Manby Transformer Stations in Etobicoke. With a budget of $73 million, the line is expected to supply up to 300 megawatts of electricity, sufficient to power approximately 300,000 homes located in western Toronto, southern Mississauga, and Oakville, according to a recent release.
The construction phase of the project was notable not only for its scale but also for the economic impact it had, supporting around 100 jobs throughout its duration. Impressively, the project was completed on schedule and came in $10 million under the projected budget. These savings were strategically redirected to enhance a recreational trail that runs alongside the transmission corridor.
The Richview to Manby project was first highlighted in the Independent Electricity System Operator’s 2019 Toronto Integrated Regional Resource Plan. It was identified as a priority investment aimed at bolstering the reliability of the electricity supply and increasing capacity in western Toronto.
To achieve the successful completion of this project, Hydro One, the company behind the initiative, managed to procure approximately 98 percent of the required materials from Canadian suppliers. This effort was made to replace an existing idle transmission line and upgrade the facilities at the Richview and Manby Transformer Stations, as detailed in the release.
Construction on the Richview to Manby transmission line wrapped up in late 2025, with the line officially beginning to deliver power to local communities in March 2026. In conjunction with this announcement, the Ontario government is also moving forward with the Toronto Third Line project. Upon its completion, this new line is projected to deliver up to 900 megawatts of electricity directly to Toronto’s downtown core, ensuring that the city has the necessary power supply to support new housing developments, economic expansion, and critical infrastructure such as public transit.
