Evan Siddall, former head of the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corp., has been appointed as the inaugural chair of Build Canada Homes, the federal affordable housing agency that transitioned to a Crown corporation.
OTTAWA – The Canadian government has appointed Evan Siddall, a former investment banker and public servant, as the inaugural chair of the board of directors for Build Canada Homes, its affordable housing agency. Siddall's extensive background includes serving as the CEO of the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) from late 2013 until 2021, a period during which he played a significant role in shaping the Liberal government's national housing strategy. Before taking this position, Siddall held the role of vice-chair at BMO Capital Markets and has a notable history in finance, having previously led Alberta's AIMCo pension fund manager. His career also includes significant stints at prestigious firms such as Goldman Sachs and Irving Oil. In addition to his corporate roles, Siddall acted as a special adviser to Mark Carney during Carney's tenure as the governor of the Bank of Canada, establishing a strong connection to influential figures in Canadian economic policy.
Build Canada Homes was established nearly a year ago, with the intention of addressing the country's affordable housing challenges. In June, the agency transitioned to a Crown corporation status, which necessitates governance by an independent board of directors. According to a federal announcement, Siddall will initially exercise the board’s powers independently until the appointment process for at least eight additional directors is completed.
This strategic appointment signals the government's commitment to strengthening its focus on affordable housing through experienced leadership. Siddall's previous experience with CMHC and his deep understanding of the housing sector are expected to guide Build Canada Homes as it seeks to fulfill its mandate of increasing access to affordable housing across Canada. The timeline for the appointment of the additional directors has not been specified, but Siddall's leadership is poised to be instrumental in steering the agency during this crucial developmental phase.
