LANGFORD, B.C. – The construction of The FORGE Wellness Hub has emerged as a symbol of hope and positive change for the community of Langford, B.C. Recently, local tradespeople, families, and community members were invited to visit the construction site to participate in the event known as 'Forged in Hope.' This occasion allowed attendees to inscribe messages of hope, remembrance, and strength directly onto the building's framing before the walls are closed in.
The messages, which will be sealed within the structure as construction progresses, represent a lasting testament to the support for individuals in the skilled trades. The FORGE, located at 2775 Spencer Rd, Victoria, B.C., aims to serve as a recovery and wellness hub tailored specifically for tradespeople dealing with mental health and addiction issues.
Prior to the commencement of construction, the site housed a notorious biker club. The Construction Foundation acquired the property in June 2025, envisioning its transformation into a supportive environment for tradespeople. Abigail Fulton, the executive director of the Construction Foundation, emphasized the importance of the initiative, stating, "We’re not waiting until The FORGE opens its doors to start building hope into this place. These messages will become part of the building itself and a constant reminder that people cared enough to leave something behind for the people who will eventually come here."
The need for such a facility is underscored by troubling statistics from a 2024 survey conducted by Canada’s Building Trades, which revealed that almost 50 percent of respondents rated their mental health as fair or poor. Furthermore, Health Canada reports that among those who experienced an opioid-related death while employed, between 30 to 50 percent were individuals working in the trades. These findings highlight the significant impact of mental health and addiction issues within the construction sector.
In response to these challenges, The FORGE is being developed to provide essential services such as peer recovery coaching, clinical counseling, and treatment navigation support specifically catered to tradespeople. Notably, the facility has already been offering services since July 2025, even while its permanent structure is still under construction.
The anticipated completion of The FORGE is set for early 2027, marking a significant milestone in addressing the mental health needs of those in the skilled trades.
