The Gordie Howe International Bridge, connecting Windsor, Ontario, and Detroit, Michigan, is set to open on July 27, 2026, marking a significant achievement in cross-border trade infrastructure.

On July 24, 2026, in Toronto, Ontario, Aecon Group Inc. (TSX: ARE) celebrated a significant milestone with its partners from Bridging North America and the Windsor-Detroit Bridge Authority, as they announced the upcoming opening of the Gordie Howe International Bridge. This historic project is poised to officially open to traffic on July 27, 2026, at 12 noon, following substantial completion of the six-lane bridge over the Detroit River on June 9, 2026.
The Gordie Howe International Bridge, which connects Windsor, Ontario, and Detroit, Michigan, stands as the longest cable-stayed bridge in North America by main span. It links the busiest land border in North America and is expected to serve about 6,000 commuters daily, enhancing the critical trade link between the two countries.
Jean-Louis Servranckx, President and CEO of Aecon Group Inc., expressed pride in the company’s pivotal role in the construction of this landmark crossing. He acknowledged the collaboration with Bridging North America partners and the Windsor-Detroit Bridge Authority, highlighting the dedication and persistence of the teams involved in overcoming challenges throughout the construction process, including those posed by the global pandemic.
Thomas Clochard, Executive Vice President and COO of Aecon Group Inc., emphasized the enduring economic benefits the bridge will provide, alongside improved movement of goods and people between the U.S. and Canada. He commended the resilient teams whose commitment enabled the successful delivery of this project.
Steve Nackan, Executive Vice President and President of Aecon Concessions, noted the unique bilateral partnership structure that facilitated the bridge's construction and expressed eagerness for Aecon’s continued involvement in its operations, maintenance, and rehabilitation over the next 30 years. Aecon holds a 20% interest in the project’s equity, design-build, and long-term operations.
The project also included a Community Benefits Program, which invested over $23 million into local infrastructure, workforce training, and community initiatives, enhancing social and environmental conditions in the Sandwich/west Windsor and Delray/Southwest Detroit communities. This program has been recognized with the Envision Platinum award by the Institute for Sustainable Infrastructure.
Key project specifications include a 2.5-kilometre (853-metre main span) cable-stayed bridge, 130 acres allocated for the Canadian Port of Entry, and 167 acres for the U.S. Port of Entry. The bridge features 16 toll lanes, 60 Canada and U.S. inspection lanes, and includes 6 lanes dedicated to traffic (3 Canadian-bound and 3 U.S.-bound), along with 2 approach bridges and a multi-use civilian path. The completion of this project involved the hard work of approximately 15,800 individuals who contributed over 20.1 million hours.
