Permeable Plus, a paving and landscaping firm in Kanata, Ontario, has been penalized after a worker suffered critical injuries in a skid steer accident. The incident raised concerns about workplace safety protocols.
In a significant workplace safety case, Permeable Plus, a paving and landscaping company operating under the registration number 1000537263 Ontario Inc. from Kanata, Ontario, has been fined $70,000 following a serious injury incident involving a skid steer. The incident occurred on May 22, 2024, when a worker was handling a dry-stone bag that was suspended from the forks of a skid steer operated by a colleague. As they moved, the workerβs foot became ensnared under the right-side track of the skid steer, leading to severe injuries. The situation was investigated by the Ministry of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development, which revealed that the company failed to provide adequate safety instructions regarding the necessary distance between workers on foot and the moving machinery. This oversight was deemed a critical factor in the incident. Following this investigation, Permeable Plus entered a guilty plea in Provincial Offences Court in Ottawa on September 3, 2026. Justice of the Peace Karen (Soloman) Baum presided over the case and imposed the $70,000 fine on the company. This incident underscores the vital importance of workplace safety protocols, especially in operations involving heavy machinery, and highlights the responsibilities that employers have to ensure their workers are trained and informed regarding safety measures to prevent such accidents.
