Ground Broken on Canada’s Largest Carbon Capture Project in Alberta

Enhance Energy Inc. has begun construction on the Origins carbon capture and storage hub in Clive, Alberta, aimed at permanently storing 1.5 million tonnes of CO2 annually, bolstering the province's energy sector.

In Clive, Alberta, a village located approximately 140 kilometers south of Edmonton, Enhance Energy Inc. has officially commenced construction on what is set to become Canada's largest carbon capture project. The company announced that ground was broken on the Origins project, with operations expected to begin in January. This ambitious carbon capture and storage hub is designed to initially accommodate the permanent storage of up to 1.5 million tonnes of carbon dioxide each year.
Enhance Energy currently operates Alberta’s largest carbon capture site in Clive, which has successfully stored more than nine million tonnes of carbon dioxide since its inception in 2020. The technology utilized in carbon capture involves capturing carbon dioxide emissions produced from burning fossil fuels before they can enter the atmosphere, aiming to mitigate environmental impact.
The Origins hub will primarily focus on storing carbon emissions sourced from two significant facilities: the Northwest Redwater Sturgeon Refinery and the Nutrien Redwater fertilizer plant, both situated in Alberta's industrial heartland. Enhance Energy envisions that the facility will serve a broad spectrum of sectors, including oil and gas, as well as power generation.
Enhance Energy is also a founding partner of the Alberta Carbon Trunk Line, an extensive carbon capture system that features a pipeline stretching from the Edmonton area to Clive. The new Origins hub will link with this trunk line as well as Enhance Energy’s existing operations in Clive, enhancing the infrastructure for carbon management in the region.
Tim Hodgson, the federal minister of energy and natural resources, expressed optimism regarding the project, stating that it will contribute to Canada’s goal of becoming an environmentally responsible energy superpower. "The federal and provincial governments and industry are working together as one Team Canada to build big things in this country again," he remarked in a statement released on Wednesday.
Alberta’s energy minister, Brian Jean, echoed this sentiment, asserting that the project will position the province as a leader in producing “the most responsible oil and gas in the world” and will also generate job opportunities in rural Alberta. The collaborative efforts between government and industry stakeholders highlight the commitment to advancing sustainable energy solutions while fostering economic growth in the region.
