Hydro One Files Application for North Shore Link Project

Hydro One and Hydro One Sault Ste. Marie LP seek approval for a $1.3 billion transmission line project aimed at enhancing regional connectivity.

In Toronto, Hydro One, in collaboration with Hydro One Sault Ste. Marie LP (HOSSM), has submitted a joint application to the Ontario Energy Board (OEB) for the construction of the North Shore Link. This proposed infrastructure entails a new 230-kilovolt transmission line that will connect the Mississagi Transformer Station (TS) located near Wharncliffe to HOSSM's Third Line TS in Sault Ste. Marie. As part of this initiative, Hydro One is set to upgrade the existing Mississagi TS and expand the adjacent Algoma TS to ensure compliance with system requirements. In parallel, HOSSM will oversee all enhancements to the Third Line TS, as outlined in an official release.
The project represents a significant investment of $1.3 billion, aimed at bolstering the electrical connection between Ontario's northeast and northwest regions. The transmission line is projected to be operational by 2029. Notably, there is an opportunity for nine potential First Nation partners to invest in a 50 percent equity share in the transmission line component of this project. Hydro One and the participating First Nations will engage in ongoing collaboration throughout the planning, development, and construction phases of the line.
Filing a leave-to-construct application under Section 92 of the Ontario Energy Board Act, 1998 is a necessary step for electricity transmitters in Ontario seeking approval from the OEB to build, expand, or reinforce the transmission system. The application submitted includes comprehensive details regarding the project's route, design, timeline, and associated costs.
