NAIT Breaks Ground on $779 Million Advanced Skills Centre in Edmonton

The Northern Alberta Institute of Technology has commenced construction on the Advanced Skills Centre, a $779 million facility aimed at enhancing skilled trades and technology education.

EDMONTON – The Northern Alberta Institute of Technology (NAIT) has officially begun construction on its Advanced Skills Centre (ASC), a significant development that promises to reshape skilled trades and technology education in the region. The groundbreaking ceremony marks the initiation of work on the expansive 625,000-square-foot facility, which will be situated on NAIT's main campus. This project carries a total budget of $779 million, with funding sourced from both the Government of Alberta and NAIT itself. The provincial government is contributing 75 percent of the funding, while NAIT is responsible for the remaining 25 percent.
The Advanced Skills Centre is poised to consolidate 29 educational programs under one roof, thus revolutionizing training in various fields, including construction, transportation, manufacturing, and energy. This innovative facility is designed to replicate actual work environments, offering flexible learning spaces that will provide students with practical experiences and essential skills.
The ASC is expected to significantly increase NAIT's capacity, allowing the institution to accommodate an additional 5,500 students, thereby raising the total number of skilled trades students trained annually to over 15,000. "As a NAIT graduate, I understand the profound impact that a conducive learning environment can have on a student's future," stated Nathalie Durant, a NAIT alumna who specialized in plumbing and gasfitting. She emphasized that the Advanced Skills Centre will equip students and apprentices with the necessary technology, space, and hands-on training to foster confidence and prepare them for rewarding careers in the skilled trades.
Funding for NAIT's portion of the project is being sourced from internal allocations as well as contributions from donors and industry partners. The Advanced Skills Centre is on track to welcome its first cohort of students in the fall of 2030, marking a significant milestone in the evolution of skilled trades education in Alberta. The project is being executed in partnership with Dialog + GEC, the project's architect, and PCL Construction, which is serving as the construction manager. With its ambitious scope and vision, the ASC is set to play a pivotal role in the future of trade education in Canada.
