Par Energy Services Inc. has been penalized for failing to ensure worker safety, resulting in a serious injury at a drilling site. The company is required to pay $100,000 to a safety scholarship fund.

On July 20, Par Energy Services Inc. was found guilty in the Red Deer Court of Justice of violating the Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Code by failing to protect the health and safety of a worker. The charges were linked to an incident that occurred on February 8, 2023, at a worksite near Rocky Mountain House, involving both Par Energy Services and Savanna Drilling Corp. During the installation of casing in a horizontal well, a worker suffered serious injuries after coming into contact with moving gears within a power tong. The court's decision, based on section 49 of the OHS Act, mandated that Par Energy Services Inc. pay a fine of $100,000 to Red Deer Polytechnic. This payment is intended to contribute to the Matthew Schwartz Memorial Endowment Fund, which provides scholarships aimed at students who demonstrate a commitment to workplace safety. Following the court proceedings, all other charges against Par Energy Services Inc. were withdrawn, and the same applied to the charges against Savanna Drilling Corp. It was noted in the release that both companies, along with the Crown, have a period of up to 30 days to consider an appeal regarding the conviction or the penalty imposed.
