Nunavut Secures Funding for Housing and Infrastructure Development

The governments of Canada and Nunavut have announced a significant funding agreement aimed at enhancing housing and health infrastructure in Nunavut over the next decade.

IQALUIT, NUNAVUT — In a significant development for the territory, the governments of Canada and Nunavut have finalized a crucial agreement under the Provincial and Territorial stream of the Build Communities Strong Fund. This agreement will provide Nunavut with a substantial investment of $81.3 million dedicated to infrastructure projects over a decade, focusing particularly on housing and post-secondary education initiatives. Additionally, Nunavut will receive $74.1 million earmarked for health infrastructure projects over the next three years.
As part of this funding initiative, the Nunavut government has pledged to promote housing development by committing to not raise any fees or taxes that could potentially obstruct housing supply. Furthermore, under the Community stream of the Build Communities Strong Fund, Nunavut is set to receive an additional $18.7 million in the fiscal year 2026–27.
In collaboration with the Nunavut Housing Corporation and Nunavut Tunngavik Incorporated (NTI), the primary goal is to construct at least 750 new housing units. This includes a diverse range of housing types: 25 units to be built by NTI, 425 public housing units, 150 affordable housing units, and 150 supportive housing units designed to provide wraparound supports for individuals with complex needs. The construction of some of these units has already commenced in Iqaluit, according to the official release.
To date, nearly 100 modular housing units have been successfully shipped to the region, with homes already occupied in Cambridge Bay and additional units being added in Iqaluit and seven other communities across Nunavut. Looking ahead, plans are in place for the delivery of an additional 120 housing units during the 2026 sealift. Notably, more than 30 percent of these units are expected to be constructed using modern building methods, which may enhance efficiency and sustainability in the territory's housing sector.
