Patkau Architects Receives Fifth AIA Architecture Award for Innovative Arbour House Design

Patkau Architects has been awarded its fifth AIA Architecture Award for the Arbour House, a project that integrates landscape and architectural elements in Victoria, British Columbia.

Patkau Architects, based in Vancouver, has been recognized with its fifth AIA Architecture Award for the design of the Arbour House. This accolade highlights the firm’s continued excellence in architectural innovation. The Arbour House, which spans 6,000 square feet, is described as a harmonious blend of landscape, light, and family living, overlooking the scenic Cadboro Bay in Victoria, British Columbia.
The design features retractable glass walls and operable skylights, enhancing the home’s natural lighting and ventilation. Furthermore, the building’s envelope has been optimized to exceed energy step code compliance, showcasing Patkau Architects' commitment to sustainable design practices. The incorporation of geothermal energy, alongside high-efficiency ground source heat pumps, exemplifies the project's energy-conscious approach.
In addition to these features, the Arbour House includes a rooftop photovoltaic system consisting of 60 solar panels, each rated at 335 watts, which contributes to the home’s energy efficiency. The architectural jury for the 2026 AIA Architecture Award praised the project for its thoughtful design, stating that it represents a beautifully conceived and executed pavilion-like dwelling that is uplifting, inviting, and generous in spirit.
The Arbour House reflects a design philosophy that embraces simplicity and a sense of connection, avoiding unnecessary complexity. The 2026 Architecture Award, conferred during the AIA Conference on Architecture & Design awards gala earlier this month, honors outstanding achievements in contemporary architecture. It aims to showcase the diverse range of exceptional work created by architects, emphasizing how buildings and spaces can significantly enhance the lives of those who inhabit them.
This recognition not only marks a significant milestone for Patkau Architects but also reinforces the firm’s status within the architectural community as a leader in sustainable and innovative design.
