Prime Minister Carney Hosts Landmark Investment Summit in Toronto

Prime Minister Mark Carney is leading Canada's first investment summit in Toronto, aiming to attract global investors to various sectors, including energy and infrastructure. The event has already seen signed deals and is part of a broader strategy to stimulate $1 trillion in investment over five years.

OTTAWA — Prime Minister Mark Carney is extending a warm welcome to international investors as Toronto prepares to host a pivotal investment summit beginning Monday. This event marks Canada’s inaugural investment summit, drawing hundreds of executives and global asset managers eager to explore significant projects at various developmental stages across the nation. Over the next two days, Carney, alongside his cabinet members and provincial premiers, will promote investment opportunities spanning multiple sectors, notably energy, infrastructure, and critical minerals. The summit will commence with a private gala dinner at the Art Gallery of Ontario, exclusively for attendees and media personnel.
In a reception held Sunday evening for Canadian business leaders and politicians, Carney hinted at the successful signing of several deals in advance of the summit. "We possess what the world desires: energy, resources, talent, technology, and capital," Carney remarked, underscoring Canada’s competitive edge. He emphasized the importance of trust, a sentiment he conveyed in a veiled reference to U.S. President Donald Trump.
On Tuesday, the summit will shift to the Four Seasons Hotel in downtown Toronto, where investors will convene with the Prime Minister and other officials for presentations on Canada’s investment landscape. This summit is a critical component of Carney’s ambition to generate $1 trillion in investments within the next five years. He expressed that despite differing opinions, those present share a common vision for Canada’s future: a commitment to more construction, increased trade, and fostering sustainable prosperity domestically.
Ontario Premier Doug Ford highlighted the international scope of the event, noting attendees from countries such as Kuwait, Malaysia, the Netherlands, Singapore, Qatar, Norway, Japan, and Australia. Ford stated, "This initiative is about forging relationships, unlocking opportunities, and demonstrating that Ontario is one of the most appealing places for investment globally." He mentioned that there are 15 major projects available in Ontario, focusing on energy production, transmission, critical minerals, mining, AI, and advanced manufacturing sectors.
"We are establishing an economy capable of competing on a global scale, and that will be my message during the Canada Investment Summit," Ford added. He asserted that Ontario has the necessary resources to meet global demands and emphasized the importance of making this known to investors worldwide.
While Carney and Ford framed the summit as a gateway for investment in Canada, civil society organizations expressed concerns regarding the event’s alignment with business leaders who they believe contribute to escalating global crises. Demonstrators, including labor unions, Indigenous representatives, and advocates for climate and housing, are expected to mobilize on Monday, carrying a banner proclaiming "The Many vs. The Money" and planning direct interventions with attendees. They voiced their opposition to Carney’s strategy of placing Canada’s economic future in the hands of corporate leaders, raising alarms about the potential impact on public services, pipelines, and arms manufacturing.
A source familiar with the summit's plans, who requested anonymity, confirmed that former Conservative Prime Minister Stephen Harper is slated to deliver the closing remarks at the event.
