New $85 Million Renal Facility Opens at Surrey Memorial Hospital

A new renal facility at Surrey Memorial Hospital aims to increase dialysis treatment capacity significantly, with an investment of $85 million contributing to the region's healthcare infrastructure.

In Surrey, British Columbia, a new renal facility has commenced operations at Surrey Memorial Hospital, which is set to function seven days a week. This standalone facility is strategically positioned on the northwestern corner of the hospital campus and introduces an additional 21 hemodialysis treatment stations. With this enhancement, the total number of dialysis stations at the hospital rises to 60, thereby boosting its dialysis treatment capacity by approximately 55 percent, according to a recent release.
Surrey Memorial Hospital, which currently administers around 42,000 dialysis treatments annually, anticipates that the new facility will increase this number to an estimated 65,000 treatments per year. The establishment of the renal facility represents a significant investment by the province, which, alongside contributions from the Surrey Hospitals Foundation, has allocated $85 million towards this initiative.
The opening of this center is part of a larger strategy aimed at improving access to healthcare services in Surrey. This strategy includes the expansion of community-based healthcare services, the establishment of a new medical school at Simon Fraser University, and plans for a new hospital and BC Cancer Centre located in Cloverdale.
In addition to the new renal facility, renovations and expansions are ongoing at Surrey Memorial Hospital to enhance surgical services. Some renovations have already been completed, and work on the final operating room is slated to commence in 2026. The hospital is also expanding its medical imaging services, with construction currently underway for a second MRI scanner, which will include new patient waiting areas and additional spaces for pre- and post-procedural care.
Further developments at the Jim Pattison Outpatient Care and Surgery Centre include a CT scanner suite that is expected to be operational by late 2026. These initiatives are part of a broader investment strategy at Surrey Memorial Hospital, which has also seen the introduction of new cardiac catheterization suites, interventional radiology suites, and a new acute care tower, all aimed at bolstering healthcare services in the region.
