TC Energy Commits to Expanding Alberta's Natural Gas Infrastructure Amid Rising Demand Concerns

In response to growing demand for natural gas in Alberta and concerns raised in a cabinet report, TC Energy Corp. emphasizes its commitment to investing in the Nova Gas Transmission Ltd. pipeline network to support the province's energy needs.

CALGARY, ALTA. — TC Energy Corp., a leading pipeline company responsible for transporting three-quarters of Western Canada’s natural gas, has expressed its readiness to continue investing in its extensive network in Alberta. This commitment comes in light of a recent leak of an Alberta cabinet report that highlighted concerns regarding the company’s capability to support the burgeoning artificial intelligence data centre sector, oilsands projects, and other expanding sources of demand within the province.
The cabinet report critiques TC Energy’s future expansion plans for its Nova Gas Transmission Ltd. (NGTL) pipeline, suggesting that these plans are misaligned with the anticipated demand growth in Alberta. It indicates that TC’s significant market presence has resulted in a “market failure,” leaving critical growth areas without adequate access to natural gas.
The NGTL network, operational since 1957, is a comprehensive system that spans across Alberta and connects into northeastern British Columbia, currently shipping an impressive average of 15 billion cubic feet of natural gas daily. TC Energy asserts that the demand for natural gas is increasing at a pace that outstrips the development of necessary infrastructure. Over the past decade, the company has invested more than $15 billion in expansion projects and plans to allocate an additional $1 billion to further enhance the system.
“TC Energy is prepared to keep investing in NGTL and expand the system to meet the scale of opportunity in front of Alberta and Canada,” the company stated. It emphasized the need for collaboration among industry partners, customers, regulators, governments, stakeholders, and rightsholders to create conducive conditions for infrastructure development.
The company’s statement underscores the urgency of rapidly bringing forth credible solutions, capital, and capacity to support Alberta’s growth, ultimately enabling Canada to seize the opportunities ahead.
The Alberta cabinet report, which has been reviewed by The Canadian Press and was initially reported by The Narwhal, also included a recommendation for the province to establish two Crown corporations aimed at facilitating the development of new natural gas transmission lines. However, Premier Danielle Smith remarked during her radio call-in show, “Your Province Your Premier,” that such a move is “unlikely,” suggesting that there should be sufficient interest from the private sector to meet the demand.
The report also mentioned potential legal challenges from TC Energy and possibly ATCO Gas and Pipelines Ltd. as significant considerations that could impact the implementation of new infrastructure projects. As Alberta continues to navigate its energy demands, TC Energy's proactive stance highlights the complexities and challenges of meeting the province's natural gas needs amid evolving market conditions and regulatory landscapes.
