EDMONTON — In a significant move towards advancing nuclear energy in the region, Alberta, Saskatchewan, and the Northwest Territories have officially signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU). This agreement establishes a collaborative framework for these jurisdictions to enhance information-sharing and cooperation regarding various nuclear generation technologies. The scope of the MOU encompasses large-scale nuclear reactors, small modular reactors, microreactors, and the necessary transmission infrastructure. According to a release issued by the parties involved, the agreement is anchored by three fundamental priorities. Firstly, it seeks to bolster the security, reliability, and long-term affordability of the electricity systems across the participating provinces and territory. Secondly, it supports the evaluation of nuclear technologies as a viable and economical pathway toward achieving carbon-neutral electricity generation. Lastly, the MOU aims to explore opportunities for enhancing electricity transmission infrastructure throughout the region.
The agreement has been designed to respect the unique energy needs and priorities of Alberta, Saskatchewan, and the Northwest Territories.
