The City of Vancouver has announced the successful completion of three significant sewer upgrade projects, marking a milestone in its ongoing efforts to enhance essential infrastructure. This initiative is part of a broader $18 million investment under the 2023-2026 Capital Plan, aimed at replacing aging sewer systems that previously combined sewage and rainwater into a single pipeline. The upgrades involve the implementation of separate systems for stormwater and sanitary sewage, ensuring improved efficiency and sustainability. The first project, known as the Memorial West trenchless sewer upgrades, was completed with a budget of $7.5 million. This endeavor involved the installation of 400 meters of new storm and sanitary pipes beneath Highbury Street, extending from West 31st Avenue to the laneway south of West 33rd Avenue. Additionally, significant sections of the new piping were laid beneath Memorial West Park. Utilizing trenchless construction methods allowed crews to expedite the project while minimizing disruption to the surrounding areas, culminating in the project's completion in July.
Another noteworthy project is the Shaughnessy area sewer upgrades, which came with a price tag of $7.3 million. This upgrade involved the separation of 5.8 kilometers of combined sewer pipe, stretching from West 26th Avenue to West 29th Avenue. The newly installed infrastructure is projected to serve the neighborhood effectively for the next century, enhancing the system's capacity and reliability. Alongside the sewer upgrades, the project also included the installation of new curbs and street repaving, which are expected to improve accessibility and create safer streets for residents and visitors alike. Construction on this project is anticipated to conclude by early September.
Lastly, the East 35th Avenue sewer upgrades were completed with a budget of $3.3 million. This project focused on the replacement of 135 meters of outdated sewer pipe located between Main Street and Quebec Street. Similar to the other upgrades, it included the addition of new curbs and street repaving, aimed at providing a smoother and safer experience for pedestrians, cyclists, and other road users. This project was finalized in May.
These infrastructure improvements reflect Vancouver's commitment to modernizing its sewer systems and enhancing public safety and environmental sustainability. By investing in these critical upgrades, the city aims to better serve its residents and address the challenges posed by aging infrastructure.
