Government Awards EllisDon Design Contract for Future Fighter Infrastructure

News Summary On August 28, 2020, the Honourable Harjit S. Sajjan, Canada’s Minister of National Defence, announced that EllisDon Construction Services Inc. has been selected to design a fighter jet facility at 4 Wing Cold Lake. The new infrastructure will be situated in Cold Lake, Alberta, at one of the primary operating bases for the Royal Canadian Air Force’s future fighter aircraft. Covering approximately 19,300 m², the facility is set to accommodate two tactical fighter squadrons and include dedicated areas for routine operations, maintenance, administration, mission planning, simulator training, as well as operational and support training squadrons. The project, established under the Future Fighter Capability Project (FFCP), is intended to ensure long-term support for the new aircraft. The building will adhere to Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Silver standards and incorporate energy-efficient practices. Reflecting on the opportunity, EllisDon’s Edmonton Area Manager, Chris Lane, stated, "Our Edmonton team is so proud to be awarded the contract," emphasizing the firm's commitment to supporting both the Department of National Defence and Defence Construction Canada. Industry Context This development is significant in the Canadian construction and infrastructure sector as it demonstrates continued public investment in modern military facilities and sustainable design. The project underscores a broader trend toward energy-efficient construction and adherence to high environmental standards within federal infrastructure projects. At a time when the Canadian construction market is aligning with evolving defense requirements and sustainability targets, contracts like this highlight the industry's capability to support large-scale, mission-critical initiatives while meeting rigorous performance criteria.
