Aecon Group Inc. announces its partnership in the Simcoe Battery Energy Storage Project, set to commence operations in 2030, enhancing Ontario's electricity grid reliability.

Toronto, Ontario – On July 28, 2026, Aecon Group Inc. (TSX: ARE) revealed that it has entered into a significant agreement to advance the Simcoe Battery Energy Storage System Project, a 150 MW / 1,200 MWh facility located in Norfolk County, Ontario. This initiative is being undertaken by Simcoe Battery Project General Partnership Inc., of which Aecon Concessions is a key equity partner. The partnership also includes Six Nations of the Grand River Development Corporation (SNGRDC), the Mississaugas of the Credit Business Corporation (MCBC), Sitka Power Inc., and NRStor. The consortium has executed an Energy Storage Facility Agreement with Ontario’s Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO) to construct, own, and manage this energy storage system.
Under the terms of the 20-year agreement, the partners will provide electricity storage services to the IESO, receiving capacity payments for these services as well as additional revenue generated from energy sold to the Ontario electricity grid and ancillary services. Aecon is set to serve as the exclusive Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) provider for the project’s balance of plant works, with an EPC agreement anticipated to be finalized shortly.
The timeline for the Simcoe Battery Project aims for commercial operations to commence by 2030. Steve Nackan, Executive Vice President and President of Aecon Concessions, highlighted the project's significance, stating, "The Simcoe Battery Project will strengthen grid reliability and support the integration of renewable generation – helping to provide the resilient energy foundation and critical storage capacity required to support economic growth and meet Ontario’s growing electricity demand."

This project was developed collaboratively with SNGRDC, MCBC, NRStor, and Northland Power, alongside the construction partner Aecon-Six Nations (A6N), which emphasizes Indigenous partnerships.
