Buildots unveils the Intelligence Lab, an innovative AI-powered research facility aimed at transforming decision-making in the construction industry through data-driven insights.
Buildots, a developer of an AI-enhanced construction intelligence platform, has announced the establishment of the Buildots Intelligence Lab, touted as the first AI-powered research hub in the construction sector. This initiative is designed to assist project managers in moving away from instinctive decision-making towards a more objective, data-driven approach. The lab's operations are anchored on three fundamental pillars: providing insights that illuminate essential industry trends, establishing metrics that define performance standards, and creating benchmarks that facilitate global comparisons across various trades, sectors, and regions.The lab will utilize aggregated and anonymized data that has previously been inaccessible to the industry, allowing it to publish critical metrics, insights, and benchmarks at no charge. With its headquarters located in Chicago and additional offices in London, U.K., and Tel Aviv, Israel, Buildots has also launched a Canadian hub in Toronto. Amir Berman, the Vice President of Industry Transformation and head of the Buildots Intelligence Lab, shared insights with the Daily Commercial News, emphasizing the recruitment of professionals directly from the Canadian construction sector—individuals with hands-on experience in managing projects rather than just software experts.
Founded in 2018, Buildots aims to create a construction intelligence platform that caters to projects of all sizes, enabling project managers to track progress accurately down to individual components. Berman highlighted that this platform delivers construction intelligence that aids teams in completing projects on time and within budget, foreseeing delays in advance, minimizing disputes with subcontractors, and standardizing workflows for more efficient execution.
The Buildots platform employs AI through a three-step process: capturing images using 360-degree cameras or drones, performing proprietary AI analysis that matches the captured footage against the project’s BIM model and schedule to ascertain actual construction progress, and delivering intelligence that provides real-time predictions of delays weeks before they would typically be apparent in traditional schedule updates. This proactive approach allows teams to address issues promptly when they arise.
Berman noted that significant national contractors such as Ledcor and Pomerleau are adopting Buildots comprehensively at the organizational or portfolio level, allowing for value accumulation across multiple projects. This benchmarking process creates opportunities for continuous improvement, ensuring that lessons learned from one project can be applied to future endeavors, rather than starting from scratch each time.
The creation of the Buildots Intelligence Lab has been inspired by the work conducted over recent years, staffed by top researchers and construction professionals. The lab's findings will be based on data collected from construction projects globally, with regional specifics typically shared alongside the insights published.
As it evolves, the lab is inviting contributions from industry professionals, academics, and analysts to present their questions and hypotheses, encouraging collaboration to validate onsite patterns through statistical evidence. Buildots asserts that such a research tool is essential at this moment, as the construction market has experienced consistent growth. According to the Construction Market Report 2026, the market is projected to reach $17.26 trillion by 2026 and could potentially hit $21.73 trillion by 2030, driven by urbanization, expanding public infrastructure programs, and rising demand for residential construction.
Despite this growth, Buildots points out that the industry continues to lean on benchmarking frameworks established decades ago, which do not reflect the complexities of modern projects, advancements in technology, or the availability of data. The lab's initial research both challenges and corroborates long-standing industry beliefs, revealing critical insights regarding schedule adherence. For instance, education projects have been found to rank the lowest in schedule adherence, significantly trailing behind sectors like healthcare and data centers. Berman reported that across the analyzed projects, only 48 percent of activities are on track during an average week, with commercial projects achieving 44 percent adherence and industrial projects at 43 percent.
Another significant discovery pertains to the final stages of project activities, which often consume 27 percent of the overall duration, indicating that delays in the latter stages are more structural than incidental. Specifically, in the rapidly growing and time-sensitive sector of data center construction, the lab identified a substantial gap of 20 to 50 percent between the planned and actual delivery of mechanical, electrical, and plumbing (MEP) work for scheduled weeks. This gap represents a considerable source of delay in complex, service-heavy constructions that general contractors and owners are striving to complete on time.
Although the Buildots Intelligence Lab is part of the Buildots organization, it functions independently from its commercial ventures, ensuring that its research remains unbiased and transparent. Berman emphasized that all findings will be made publicly available on the lab’s homepage, with the goal of modernizing an industry that has relied on intuition and outdated benchmarks for far too long, stressing that no single entity can resolve these issues alone.
