Canada's Largest Helium Purification Facility Commences Operations in Saskatchewan

North American Helium has launched Canada’s largest helium purification facility in Saskatchewan, enhancing the province's helium production and potential for a domestic supply chain.

In a significant development for the Canadian helium industry, the largest helium purification facility in the country has officially commenced operations in southwest Saskatchewan, near Stewart Valley. This state-of-the-art facility is expected to generate around 73 million cubic feet of helium annually, which will elevate Saskatchewan's helium production by over 40 percent. North American Helium, the province's leading helium producer, has made substantial investments totaling approximately $700 million and has drilled more than 120 wells in Saskatchewan over the past ten years.
Saskatchewan is a powerhouse in helium production, supplying over 95 percent of Canada’s helium. North American Helium has been instrumental in establishing the province as a key hub for helium production in the nation. Helium is an essential resource utilized in various industrial applications, particularly in the medical, defense, space exploration, and advanced manufacturing sectors.
The Government of Saskatchewan is actively advocating for modifications to the federal tax system. These proposed changes aim to foster private investment and bolster the growth of the helium sector within the province. By aligning helium with other critical minerals in Canada regarding tax treatment, the government hopes to create favorable conditions for the establishment of Canada's first commercial-scale helium liquefaction facility in Saskatchewan.
The introduction of a liquefaction facility would not only ensure a fully domestic supply chain for helium but also pave the way for a new export sector to cater to international partners. Earlier this year, the province took a notable step by launching its inaugural Crown Public Offering for Helium and Associated Gases. This initiative aims to establish a fair, transparent, and competitive framework for awarding crown rights, thereby enhancing investment opportunities within the helium sector.
As the helium industry continues to evolve in Saskatchewan, these developments signal a promising future for the sector, with potential for increased production capacity and economic growth driven by strategic government support and private investment.
