Nordspace Secures $20 Million Contract with National Defence for Newfoundland Launch Pad

Nordspace has entered a $20 million agreement with the Department of National Defence to provide priority access to a dedicated launch pad at its Atlantic Spaceport Complex in Newfoundland, as part of Canada's efforts to enhance its sovereign space capabilities.

ST. JOHN’S — Nordspace, a company focusing on launching rockets from southern Newfoundland, has announced a significant milestone with the signing of a $20-million contract with the Department of National Defence (DND). This 10-year agreement grants the DND priority access to a dedicated launch pad at Nordspace’s Atlantic Spaceport Complex, which is currently under construction on the Burin Peninsula of Newfoundland. The funding from this contract is earmarked for the maintenance of the facility and ensuring it is operationally ready for upcoming launches. However, it is important to note that individual launch missions will be organized through separate contracts, providing flexibility for future operations.
Last week, Nordspace reported that it has progressed into the second phase of construction for its spaceport located in St. Lawrence, N.L., a small town with a population of approximately 1,115, situated on the southeastern edge of the Burin Peninsula. Earlier this month, the company successfully launched its satellite, Terra Nova, into orbit aboard a SpaceX rocket from the Vandenberg Space Force Base in California.
Rahul Goel, the chief executive officer of Nordspace, emphasized the importance of this venture by stating, "A sovereign spacefaring Canada must be able to launch payloads into orbit from its own soil, on its own rocket." This sentiment reflects a growing recognition of the need for Canada to establish its own capabilities in space exploration and satellite deployment.
The contract with the DND is described by Nordspace as a strategic advantage, positioning the company uniquely within Canada’s ongoing efforts to enhance its sovereign launch capabilities. Additionally, a release from the federal government highlighted that this agreement is part of a broader initiative involving $3 billion in investments by National Defence this year aimed at bolstering Canada’s space capabilities and fostering a robust and competitive domestic space sector.
Nordspace has faced challenges in the past, attempting several launches from its St. Lawrence facility last year, with many being delayed or cancelled due to various issues, including fires on the launch pad and fishing boats entering the exclusion zones during planned launch windows. This new contract with the DND is anticipated to provide the necessary resources and stability to move forward with future launches from the Atlantic Spaceport Complex.
